First Look: Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in New Tomb Raider Film

By on March 28, 2017 | No comments yet

MGM Studios and Warner Bros has officially released new photos of Alicia Vikander embodying the role of a fresh faced and eager young Lara Croft. The movie will stand as a reimagining of the Tomb Raider film franchise, much like the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot, and will not have connections to previous films that starred Angelina Jolie as classic Lara Croft.

The film is set to release in theaters March 16th, 2018 and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and in select territories by MGM.

Check out the film’s synopsis and gallery of our new Lara Croft!

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.  Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, “Tomb Raider” is the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero.

PLAY Expo 2016 – How to survive a comic con

By on August 27, 2016 | No comments yet

comic conWith the huge announcement of the 20 years of Tomb Raider celebration taking place at PLAY Expo Manchester, UK this October 8-9th We’ve put together a comic con survival guide! Feel free to use it for information if you are a first time con-goer or as a check list for seasoned veterans.

Do your research before the day: Show guide, floor plans, signing / photoshoot schedules and cosplay prop weapon restrictions

It always pays to be prepared, be sure to thoroughly research the event before attending so that your day flows as smoothly as possible. Having a show guide to hand can be extremely useful! If you are attending signings and photo shoots, have a copy of the schedule nearby so that you know where you need to be and at what time.

If you are cosplaying, one of the most important things to do is to check the terms and conditions for props, it would be terrible to have your props confiscated because they did not follow the guidelines! Be prepared and research thoroughly.

Where possible, purchase early bird/entry or weekend tickets

If you are planning to attend both days of the event, it is always more financially beneficial to purchase a weekend tickets, as single day tickets are usually a little more expensive. Purchase your tickets as soon as possible as weekend tickets are usually the first to sell out. If you are attending for a single day, it is always best to purchase an early bird/entry ticket rather than a general entry ticket. This is to ensure you get into the event and through the queuing system as swiftly as possible, so you can start enjoying your day!

Prepare yourself, there can be big crowds

Each year PLAY Expo gets bigger and bigger, attracting more people every year! So do your research before the day: Show guide, floor plans, signing and photo shoot schedules.

Keep hydrated, drink lots of water

Naturally, with all of these people in one giant hall, the temperatures are bound to rise, keep well hydrated by drinking lots of water. You can either take your own or there will be stalls inside selling drinks.

Technology – Take a fully charged camera, an empty memory card and a portable phone charger

Comic cons are an amazing place to take lots of photos, the cosplayers look wonderful and put so much effort into their costumes, but remember to always ask permission before taking a photo of cosplayers. These days’ cell phone batteries deplete very fast, so a portable charger for your phone is always a good idea, you want to make sure you always have battery power.

The most important tip – Enjoy yourself

It’s not every day that we have these special events to bring us all together, make sure you enjoy PLAY Expo for everything that it is, take lots of photos, catch as many panels as you can, go shopping, just make sure to have fun.
The 20 Year celebration of Tomb Raider event was organised by PLAY Expo in partnership with Tomb of Ash. Meet other Tomb Raider fans as well as cast and crew who worked on the Tomb Raider games! Tickets are on sale now at PLAY Expo’s official website. The event takes place at Event City Manchester, United Kingdom on Saturday October 8th and Sunday October 9th 2016.

From the press release:

In tribute to gaming’s first lady of adventure, the party starts with what is set to be the largest Tomb Raider panel ever assembled! Hosted by Sky Sports™ eSports commentator Matt Andrews, and with a host of famous names throughout the history of the franchise, fans will be able to engage in a Q&A with the panel as well as hear untold stories from the development of the series. With more names yet to announce, confirmed guests so far include:

Tomb Raider – Live in Concert

By on August 24, 2016 | No comments yet

TR-Suite-Edit

To further celebrate 20 years of Tomb Raider, composer Nathan McCree, composer for the first three Tomb Raider games has put together a suite of music which will be performed live at the Eventim Hammersmith Apollo in London, UK on Sunday 18th December 2016. You can purchase tickets to the event here

The concert will include all of the classical compositions as well as extended tracks from the original three games. If you are unable to attend this event, you will have the option to purchase the Tomb Raider suite on CD or by digital download instead – the suite was recorded by a full orchestra at Abbey Road studios in London.

There will also be a TV documentary called Tomb Raider Remastered which features the entire process – re-composing the tracks, the recording of the CD and the lead up to the final event on December 18th.

Here is some background information from the press release:

Twenty years ago, when the first Tomb Raider game was released and the world was introduced to its heroine, Lara Croft, few could have predicted its extraordinary impact and success. Tomb Raider games have now sold over 45m copies, making it one of the most successful gaming franchises in the world. Lara Croft is the most recognisable character in gaming, with Time Magazine naming her in their Top 100 Most Influential People Who Never Lived, alongside Sherlock Holmes, Hamlet and Mr Spock. The game has spawned two major motion pictures, with a third in production starring Alicia Vikander as Lara.

To celebrate 20 years of the Tomb Raider franchise and the legendary Lara Croft, composer Nathan McCree, who wrote the music for the first Tomb Raidergames, has created a 70-minute concert suite for full orchestra and chorus based on his original themes as well as extensions and variations of original tracks from the first three Tomb Raider titles. McCrees Tomb RaiderTheme has been re-used, arranged and adapted in many of the Tomb Raider incarnations, including the movies, and is as famous in the game world as the James Bond Theme in the movie world. Tomb Raider – Live In Concert gives fans the unique chance to hear McCrees famous themes played by an orchestra live for the first time – and experience the excitement and power of full orchestral music live and loud!

McCree says: This is a wonderful opportunity for the fans, as well as me, to hear the music as I had always intended it.

On a giant screen above the orchestra, the story of 20 years of Tomb Raider will be told with incredible in-game footage and images; a fantastic opportunity to revisit some of the greatest scenes and adventures of Lara Croft and see the development of the character, stories and design behind the legendary game.

Tomb Raider – Live In Concert promises to be the Game Music event of the year: a unique musical and visual experience celebrating one of the greatest and most popular games ever created. No fan will want to miss it.

This is a truly special event to be enjoyed by all Tomb Raider fans alike, it is a one night only event, so be sure to pick up your tickets as soon as possible. On ordering you will have the option to purchase standard tickets or the VIP package, which includes:

  • A Top Price ticket in the front 8 rows of the central stalls
  • A Tomb Raider VIP lanyard
  • A concert programme signed by Nathan McCree
  • A limited edition print of the front page of Tomb Raider Suite, signed by Nathan McCree

Can Tomb Raider Ever Go Survival Horror?

By on March 4, 2016 | No comments yet

Revised-TR-Survival-Horror-Featured-ImageOne of the fun things we love about Tomb Raider is it’s light hearted, vibrant aesthetic. The newly rebooted titles are gritty as the franchise has ever been. But, what if this idea was taken a step further? The Tomb Raider 2013 release had a very creepy survival aspect to it. From the very beginning, Lara was knocked unconscious by a dangerous island inhabitant after she and her crew washed up on shore. The idea held a very dark and mysterious undertone, but the development’s execution persisted a disconnect from its potential to becoming a very real survival horror title.

When TR-2013 was first revealed, it was initially thought to have been entering the horror genre. Though, the studio had made it clear during it’s campaign that the game would not follow in that direction. It was still a survival action game. A young girl exploring the far reaches of the world, encountering some of the most dangerous predators and environments on the planet.

With the island of Yamatai’s lethality demonstrated throughout the course of the game, we see deep underground caverns littered with the bodies of many souls, dating back generations. Brutal sacrifices, bodies burned at the stake. Dangerous, murderous men skulking around the grounds of Yamatai with nothing to lose. These are just some of the things that could have made the final game much darker than it actually was. But with bright, beautiful landscapes, and ordinary voices that spoke for the many demented members of “the Solari,” it’s hard to perceive this new version of the franchise as “frightening.” And that is perfectly okay. That’s how the franchise has always been, only now it has a slightly darker tone to its narrative.

With all of these brilliantly implemented set pieces, can Lara Croft really take on a much more twisted sense of reality?

Recently, I was at home watching a horror film favorite. To be specific, I was watching “The Hills Have Eyes 2” on HBO. Throughout the movie, one of the characters really stuck out to me. A gorgeous blonde woman, scared shitless, but armed and persistent to save her friend who was abducted and taken to the mines that lie under the desert canyons. Resourceful and clever, she fought her way through the disgusting deformed mutants who cackled and haunted the jagged hollow hills.

Can Tomb Raider ever go survival horror? Would fans go for this? How far can this idea actually go? Can you see Lara traversing through the deep Virginia Hills, searching a lost valley for a long forgotten artifact? Can you picture Lara Croft fighting off hordes of mass inbred mountain men that only wish to consume or harm her? Perhaps it would be a good thrill and a fascinating journey to see Lara prevail. Seeing her thrive in a situation we would never expect to witness or experience!

As a long time survival horror fan, I personally think this would be a fantastic take and addition to the franchise. But I’m curious, what do you think? Let me know in the comments below your thoughts on this idea!
